Rosemary Petterson has been a practising artist and visual storyteller for the last 15 years. She graduated from the Otago Polytechnic School of Art with a Bachelor of Fine Art (Sculpture major) in 2006 and completed a Post Grad Dip. in Design (Animation/Digital Sculpture) in 2013.
I sculpt in a variety of media including steel, wood, wax, 3D printing, paint and plastic. I also use many different digital applications for physical art, film-making and digital sculpture and employ a variety of construction methods to achieve my work.
Though I use a wide variety of media the main focus throughout my art practice is largely to do with identity and how we relate to both the physical and spiritual worlds. I use my art practise as an investigation into the dichotomy of opposites, for example how do the abstract concepts of light and dark relate and reflect one another? I love to employ symbolism, pattern and other storytelling techniques to provide a visual starting point to the story of who we are and how we fit in the world. Most recently I have been using intuitive painting techniques to explore these concepts of the seen and unseen worlds.
Rose works from her home studio in Ōākura, Taranaki.
