Art by the Sea Studio

Margaret describes her work as Personal Symbolism, as it is based on personally acquired and assimilated experiences of her life, and the environment where she lives - between Mount Taranaki and the coastline.

Symbols such as shellfish feature strongly in her work, from her childhood memories growing up on the coast. Images of cows reflect her early years living on a dairy farm, where her and her husband raised four children, and where Margaret helped with the running of the farm.

Her work has broadened to focus on views from her home and studio in Ōākura, particularly featuring her garden and the many flowers that grow there. The studio has a large range of prints, cards and books for sale, as well as her original work.

Margaret mainly paints using acrylic, watercolour and mixed media. She likes to alternate her media and subject choice, so she does not become bored with her work.

Margaret has produced many commissioned works, and is the designer of the Jason Products Placemats the ‘Sea Bounty’ series.

In 2015 she wrote and produced her own book ‘Self Portrait Of A Paua’ and in 2017 had a retrospective exhibition at Percy Thomson Gallery in Taranaki showcasing over 70 works which covered 50 years of her painting career.
